Q&A: Managing Director Megan McBride on UniverCity’s new digital badge course

UniverCity Alliance Managing Director Megan McBride shares why she thinks UniverCity Alliance’s Sustainable Development for Local Government badge course is an important resource and valuable experience for students.

Megan McBride

As someone who has worked for local governments, what was your experience like becoming knowledgeable about the ins and outs of local government?

I was fortunate enough to work as an intern in the Planning and Development Department with the City of Ashland, WI for over two years while completing my undergraduate degree. During that time, I had fantastic mentors who made intentional efforts to expose me to a wide range of government functions and provide me with leadership opportunities to develop my skills and experience in local government before entering the workforce. My undergraduate education was enriched by my experiences working for the local municipality as well as the ability to reflect on these real-world experiences through my academic studies. I hope this badge will provide other learners with similar opportunities to think about local issues within a broader context of evidence-based goals and best practices.

Why is this badge important?

Though they may not work directly in local government, many people are looking for ways to affect positive change in the communities where they live, work, and play. The badge is important because it introduces learners to local government and applies the SDG framework to help understand its role in providing essential services, addressing community challenges, and promoting sustainable and vibrant communities.

What value does this badge bring to UW-Madison?

The badge brings value to UW–Madison in several important ways. First, it will serve as an introduction and resource for students and faculty interested in partnering with local governments to address real-world challenges to promote mutually beneficial projects and outcomes. Secondly, it connects local challenges to internationally recognized goals for sustainable development to help guide community improvement efforts. Finally, it provides a professional development opportunity to support students, staff, instructors, and community partners in their work to promote inclusive, sustainable, and thriving communities.

What do you hope learners will take away from completing the badge?

I hope learners take away a deeper understanding of local government services and challenges, Sustainable Development Goals, and actions they can take to further these goals at the local level.
