Student presentation awards

FLASH TALK PRESENTATIONS ($250 prize)

Flash talks are very short presentations. You will have no more than three minutes to explain your project in a clear and concise way to those who may be unfamiliar with your field of research. A single, static slide is required and will be displayed at the start of your talk. No sound, video or props are allowed. When you reach the 2:30 mark, a timekeeper will hold up a sign. A bell will sound at three minutes. Aim to finish before the bell rings.

Five students will present a flash talk. If more presenters sign up than we can accommodate, presenters will be chosen based on the course they participated in to ensure a wide representation of projects.

Judging criteria

Presenters will be judged on how well they engage the audience, convey information clearly, and demonstrate the significance of the project for the Dane County Board of Supervisors going forward.

One prize

The Distinguished Flash Talk prize ($250) will be judged by Dane County Board staff and UW-Madison faculty and staff and processed through the UW-Madison Bursar’s Office.

FLASH TALK DATES AND REGISTRATION
  • April 29, last day to sign up to give a flash talk (though the earlier the better to secure your spot)
  • April 30, PDF version of slide due
All students welcome

Students need not give a flash talk or poster presentation to attend the event. All are welcome.

POSTER SESSION PRESENTATIONS ($250 prize)

Bring a poster about your project, talk about your work, and answer any questions attendees might have. This is your chance to make connections across the campus and in the community in a friendly and informal way.

You are encouraged to use a poster you have already created for class. New posters are also allowable. There are no size restrictions. One common design is a trifold measuring four feet wide by three feet tall, mounted on foam core, and scored in the back so it stands upright on a provided table. You may also bring an easel to display your poster (contact us if you need one; we have a few). Presenters are responsible for designing and printing their poster and setting it up at the event. We have a few content and design suggestions.

We anticipate having space for all students who sign up to present a poster. If more presenters sign up than we can accommodate, presenters will be chosen based on the course they participated in to ensure a wide representation of projects.

Funds are available for poster printing on a first-come, first-served basis. If you need financial assistance, please contact us for more information by April 22.

Judging criteria

Presenters will be judged on how well they engage the audience, convey information clearly, and demonstrate the significance of the project for the Dane County Board of Supervisors going forward.

  • The Distinguished Poster prize ($250) will be judged by Dane County Board staff and UW-Madison faculty and staff.
